Introduction

Edgar Allan Poe was an extremely unique writer. In this lesson, students will investigate two of his poems, “The Raven” and “The Valley of Unrest,” to uncover all of the elements of figurative language used within them.

Learning Objectives

  • (ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.4) Students will determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone.

  • (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.9-10.5.A) Students will interpret figures of speech in context and analyze their role in the text.
